Kraków, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, tens of thousands of desperate are people streaming out of Ukraine to Poland and other countries. The European Union expects that up to 4 million people might try to leave the country because of the Russian attack. For many of them, Kraków is the first port of call. Most of them are arriving without any friends or family in Poland, out of energy, with frozen feet, children crying, phones dead and no idea where they’ll go next.

Local communities in Kraków have taken charge of welcoming, housing, and feeding new arrivals. Volunteers are working round-the-clock in shifts to help refugees find places to sleep, a warm meal, hygiene products, emotional support, and practical help with their next steps.

I’m one of the volunteers in Kraków supporting the refugees in every way I can. And the more I do, the more opportunities I see to help them. It started with making fresh soup for Zupa dla Ukrainy Kraków. Quickly, I got involved in helping with housing, free daycare for refugees, etc. As my network is growing, I am now also helping people on the other side of the border purchase medical/military things. To make sure these things end up with the right people, I only do this for verified sources, and I only buy specific things they have requested.

As I started volunteering, more and more people I know from around the world were asking if they could support me in any way, shape or form. Many of them wanted to do so financially. I am humbled by their trust and vow to spend every penny I have been given conscientiously to help the Ukrainian victims of this war.
